Dutasteride

Dutasteride is the generic name of a drug which is also known by the brand names Avodart, Avidart, Avolve, Duagen, Dutas, Dutagen and Duprost. Avodart (Dutasteride) was developed by GlaxoSmithKline for the treatment of medical conditions arising in men’s body’s brought about by the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Along with Finasteride, Dutasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. Both drugs halt the effect of the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme. Blocking the action of the enzyme stops the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT causes the enlargement of the prostate gland (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) and therefore halting DHT conversion helps in the treatment of the condition.

Dutasteride (0.5mg) blocks both isoforms of 5-alpha reductase unlike Finasteride which only blocks one. However, findings from a GlaxoSmithKline study showed that Dutasteride was no more effective than Finasteride in the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).

Whilst Finasteride has been approved for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia and Male Pattern Baldness, Dutasteride has only  been approved for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.

Clinical trials for the use of Dutasteride as a hair loss treatment were undertaken but were stopped in 2002. It is believed that the clinical trials were halted on commercial grounds and not medical ones. Results from phase II trials indicated that Dutasteride reported a superior hair count to Finasteride and is believed to be 30% more effective than Propecia (Finasteride) for hair regrowth.
